Program description:
The city walk begins at the city model located near the Nagyrondella.
After an introduction to Sopron’s urban structure, we continue past several notable sights, including the Pannonia Hotel, the former White Horse Inn, the smallest house in Hungary, the statue of the Virgin Mary and the Well of Loyalty. We then enter Sopron’s historic city centre through the Előkapu Gate.
After admiring the Fire Tower, which has become a symbol of Sopron, and the Gate of Loyalty, we explore the sights of Main Square, including the Town Hall, Storno House, General’s House, Fabricius House, the former County Hall, Kossow House and the Goat Church. On Templom Street, we see Esterházy Palace, Bezerédj Palace and the Lutheran Church. On Új Street, we learn about the history of Sopron’s Jewish community, followed by St. George’s Church, Eggenberg House, the Lenck Passage and the Green House. At Orsolya Square, we discover the Ursuline Church and the Lábasház. We then continue along Fegyvertár Street, where we see the building of the first post station and two Stolpersteine. On Petőfi Square, we visit the site of Franz Liszt’s first concert. After passing the Széchenyi and Berzsenyi Grammar Schools, the walk concludes at Széchenyi Square, by the Liszt Ferenc Cultural and Conference Centre, where we learn about the surrounding sights, including the Dominican Church, Széchenyi Palace, the Post Palace, the Old Post Palace, the Petőfi Theatre and the former Pejacsevich residence.
