Sights in Sopron

Sopron’s city centre was built on Roman foundations, can be explored on foot and is easy to reach from the forest setting of Hotel Szieszta. Below, we have collected what is worth seeing, how much time you need, and what hotel guests receive discounts for.

The historic city centre

Sopron’s Fire Tower with the Gate of Loyalty

The Fire Tower in Sopron

The symbol of the town stands on Roman foundations; its medieval cylindrical body is complemented by a Renaissance balcony and clock tower and a baroque dome. The gallery offers views of the city centre and the Lővérek. Open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. The Gate of Loyalty below the tower commemorates the 1921 referendum, to which Sopron owes the name Civitas Fidelissima.

The Goat Church on Sopron’s Main Square

Goat Church

The Gothic hall church on the south side of Main Square was begun by Franciscan friars in the 1270s and has belonged to the Benedictine order since 1787. Its official name is the Church of the Assumption; the popular name comes from the goat figure on the façade of the 47-metre tower, the heraldic animal of the Geisel family who built it. Five Diets were held within its walls and three coronations took place here. Open daily from 8:00 to 16:00.

Sopron’s Museum Quarter from above

Museum quarter

The baroque townhouses of Main Square – the Storno House, the Fabricius House and the General’s House – together with the Fire Tower make up the Museum Quarter, with a total of 13 venues. In the Fabricius House you can see finds from Roman Scarbantia as well as Sopron’s bourgeois domestic culture; separate tickets are required for the archaeological and the domestic history sections. An excellent choice for a rainy day, too.

The Old Synagogue and the city wall

The Medieval Old Synagogue in Új utca preserves the memory of the Jewish community of around 1300. From here, the walk can continue along the roughly 1,700-year-old Roman city wall towards the Várfalsétány promenade and the Várkerület.

Sopron sights with children

With children, it is worth breaking the day into shorter sections.

The Macskakő Children’s Museum brings the past closer in an interactive way. In the Experience Mine of the Mining Museum you can explore the world of miners with helmets, mine carts and period machinery.

After a programme in the city centre, you can also head towards the Lővérek with the children. At the stations of the Witch Fairy-Tale Trail local stories and skill games await the children, while the Tamás Kőhalmy Hunting Museum presents the wildlife of the forest and game management.

How should you plan your sightseeing time?

If you only have one day, do not miss the Fire Tower, Main Square, the Museum Quarter and the Old Synagogue among Sopron’s sights! As our hotel is located at the foot of the Lővérek, you can take a short walk in the forest early in the morning before your city-centre programme. The subalpine forest air will help you start exploring the city centre refreshed!
